The MTV VMAs 2026 are shaping up to be less about one generation of music taking over and more about several eras colliding on the same stage.

And that is before MTV has even revealed the complete performance lineup.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, with the live broadcast airing on CBS and MTV and streaming on Paramount+. CBS currently lists the show for 7:30 p.m. ET and 4:30 p.m. PT.
But the biggest reason the night suddenly feels like an event again may be Madonna.
Madonna Is Returning to the VMAs After 23 Years
Madonna will open the 2026 MTV VMAs, marking her first live performance on the awards show in 23 years.
CBS and MTV confirmed the news on September 16, immediately giving this year’s ceremony a major headline moment before the show has even started. Her previous live VMA performance came in 2003, during one of the most talked-about opening numbers in the show’s history.
This isn’t simply a nostalgia booking, either.
Madonna enters the ceremony as the most-nominated artist of 2026 with 11 nominations.
Her nominations include Video of the Year for “Confessions II – The Film,” Artist of the Year, Best Dance and several technical categories. Her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” is also nominated for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration.
That puts Madonna in an unusual position: she isn’t returning merely as a legendary performer being celebrated for the past. She’s also one of the night’s most competitive current nominees.
For an awards show built on pop-culture moments, that distinction matters.
Snoop Dogg Will Host the 2026 MTV VMAs
Another MTV veteran will be at the center of the ceremony.
Snoop Dogg is hosting the MTV VMAs 2026, more than three decades after becoming part of the network’s hip-hop era.
The rapper has received 13 VMA nominations during his career and won three Moon Person trophies. His history with the show stretches from his main-stage debut in 1994 to appearances involving Dr. Dre, Eminem and tributes to the Notorious B.I.G.
Snoop is also serving as an executive producer on this year’s broadcast.
That combination should give the show something MTV has often leaned on successfully: a host who isn’t standing outside the music world looking in.
He’s already part of the history being celebrated.
Taylor Swift Has Nine Nominations
Madonna may lead the field, but Taylor Swift is close behind with nine nominations.
Swift enters this year’s ceremony with 30 Moon Person wins already on her résumé. She’s nominated for Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, while “The Fate of Ophelia” appears across several major and technical categories.
Video of the Year is particularly stacked.

The top of the nominations list doesn’t end with Madonna and Swift.
Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter earned seven nominations each. Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson have five apiece, while LISA received four. Shakira and Tate McRae each picked up three nominations.
There is also a substantial first-time nominee class.
CORTIS, Don Toliver, Kali Uchis, Noah Kahan, Olivia Dean, Sienna Spiro and Yung Lean are among the artists competing for their first Moon Person, according to MTV’s nomination announcement.
That mix gives the ceremony something awards shows constantly chase: familiarity without making the ballot feel frozen in time.
Nirvana Will Receive the Video Vanguard Award
One of the evening’s most significant honors will go to Nirvana, this year’s recipient of the MTV Video Vanguard Award.
It’s a particularly fitting VMA moment.
Nirvana first performed at the awards in 1992, delivering “Lithium” during an era when the band’s rise was changing both rock radio and MTV itself. The group went on to win five VMAs during its career.
More than three decades later, the Vanguard honor connects that era of MTV to a ceremony that also features artists who grew up in a completely different media landscape.
That cross-generational contrast may end up becoming one of the defining themes of the 2026 show.
Who Is Performing at the MTV VMAs 2026?
For now, Madonna is the biggest officially confirmed performance announcement.
CBS and MTV revealed that she will open the ceremony, but the complete list of performers, presenters and special guests has not yet been announced as of September 17.
That leaves MTV with plenty of announcements still to make before September 27.
Considering the nomination pool includes Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bruno Mars, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Shakira, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Doechii, BLACKPINK and several other major names across different categories, interest in the remaining performance slots is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Their nominations, however, should not be taken as confirmation that they will perform.
How to Vote for the 2026 MTV VMAs
Fan voting is already underway.
MTV’s official voting site allows fans to cast up to 10 votes per category per day in eligible categories. Voting for most categories runs through September 25, while Best New Artist remains open further into the awards process.
Categories open to fan voting include Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Hip-Hop, Best R&B, Best Alternative, Best Latin, Best K-Pop, Best Dance and Best Country.
Several craft categories, including direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects, are not decided through the same public voting system.
When and Where to Watch the MTV VMAs 2026
The ceremony will be held in Los Angeles, with Us Weekly reporting the Peacock Theater as this year’s venue after the 2025 show took place at UBS Arena in New York.
CBS says the September 27 broadcast will air live coast-to-coast beginning at:
7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT
Viewers can watch on CBS and MTV, while Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the United States will be able to stream the ceremony live. The show will also become available through Paramount+ and MTV in additional markets afterward.
Why the 2026 VMAs Already Feel Different
The VMAs have rarely been remembered simply because of who took home the most trophies.
They survive in pop-culture memory because something happened.
