For a moment, it sounds like HBO has pulled off a surprise.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is returning on September 30, only months after viewers followed Dunk and Egg across Westeros in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel.
There is a catch, though.
This isn’t the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2. Instead, the next dose of Dunk-and-Egg action is coming through Zynga’s mobile RPG Game of Thrones: Legends, which continues to pull characters and story elements from across HBO’s expanding Westeros universe. Collider reported the September 30 return as part of the game’s latest A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms-related content.
For fans already missing the show’s unusually warm, character-driven corner of Westeros, that’s still a reason to pay attention.
What Is Happening on September 30?
Game of Thrones: Legends has steadily expanded beyond the original Game of Thrones series, incorporating characters from House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The latest push once again puts Egg in the spotlight.
Zynga previously introduced Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg as playable Champions when HBO’s series premiered in January 2026. Dunk joined the game as a Legendary Protector, while Egg was designed as a support-oriented character who works particularly well alongside his towering knight.
Now, the pair are becoming more deeply connected to one of the game’s biggest structural changes of the year.
Zynga’s official Broader Factions Update, scheduled for late September, places both Ser Duncan and Egg inside the revamped Scattered Banners faction. They’re joined by characters including Bronn, Talisa Stark, Daario Naharis and Jaqen H’ghar.
That grouping is more interesting than it may sound.
Rather than representing one of Westeros’ great noble houses, the Scattered Banners are built around people who travel, fight for unconventional causes or survive outside the usual power structures. Zynga describes the group as encompassing figures such as hedge knights, mercenaries, medics and wanderers.
That makes Dunk, perhaps the most famous hedge knight in George R.R. Martin’s world, an almost perfect fit.
Egg Is Becoming a More Valuable Support Character
Egg’s return isn’t simply cosmetic.
Zynga’s September event calendar also confirms a new Iconic Item for Egg (The Bald Boy Squire) called “I Would Not Leave You Ser.” The item became available on September 16 and pushes Egg further into a defensive, team-support role.
Its abilities reward Critical Heals, allowing Egg to cleanse negative effects and provide Block protection. He can also passively heal his team when allies receive Critical Strike Chance buffs and retaliate against certain critical attacks by applying Fire to enemies.
It’s an unusually appropriate gameplay identity for the character.
Egg’s relationship with Dunk has always been built less around raw physical strength and more around loyalty, intelligence and persistence. Turning him into someone who keeps the rest of a team alive feels closer to the spirit of the character than simply giving him another oversized attack.
And yes, the item’s name is a direct nod to that fiercely loyal version of Egg viewers came to know in the HBO series.
Dunk and Egg Now Have Their Own Corner of Game of Thrones: Legends
The broader faction overhaul could be more significant than a single new character release.
Zynga says it is restructuring several smaller factions because some lacked enough recognizable characters or meaningful roster depth. The developer also found that players generally gravitated more strongly toward Champions who belonged to identifiable factions.
The Scattered Banners expansion addresses both issues.
Dunk and Egg suddenly have a faction identity that can grow alongside them, giving Zynga plenty of room to introduce more characters connected to their adventures.
That matters because A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms operates differently from most of the franchise.
There are still Targaryens, dangerous nobles and political conflicts, but Dunk and Egg’s story spends considerably more time among ordinary knights, smallfolk, tourneys and regional disputes. Westeros feels bigger because the story isn’t constantly staring at the Iron Throne.
The Scattered Banners concept gives Game of Thrones: Legends a natural way to represent that side of George R.R. Martin’s world.
No, This Is Not A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2
This is the distinction casual fans need to know.
HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuted on January 18, 2026, with a six-episode first season starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. HBO describes the series as taking place roughly a century before Game of Thrones, during a period when the Targaryen dynasty still controls the Iron Throne.
The television series has already been renewed.
However, HBO officially announced that Season 2 will debut in 2027, meaning the September 30 development should not be confused with an early television return.
For now, Game of Thrones: Legends is effectively filling part of that gap.
Why A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Works So Well Outside HBO
The appeal of Dunk and Egg has always been their scale.
They aren’t initially commanding armies or deciding the fate of continents. Dunk is trying to make his way through Westeros as a hedge knight, while Egg carries considerably more history than his appearance suggests.
Their adventures can therefore move relatively easily between television, books and games without needing another enormous war for the Iron Throne.
Zynga appears to understand that.
When Dunk was originally added to Game of Thrones: Legends, his abilities centered on protecting weaker allies and absorbing punishment. Egg followed as a healer designed to complement him.
In other words, their gameplay relationship mirrors their story relationship.
That’s a small detail, but it’s exactly the sort of detail franchise adaptations often miss.
Westeros Isn’t Waiting for Season 2
HBO viewers still have to wait until 2027 for the next full chapter of Dunk and Egg’s television story.
Players of Game of Thrones: Legends won’t have to wait nearly as long to spend more time with them.
With Egg receiving new attention, Dunk and Egg joining the expanded Scattered Banners faction, and Zynga’s broader overhaul expected to arrive in late September, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is continuing well before its official HBO comeback.
Just don’t open HBO Max on September 30 expecting six new episodes.
