Godzilla Minus Zero Trailer Reveals New Cast and Threat
The King of the Monsters is back—and this time, Godzilla is bringing a new nightmare to postwar Japan.
A new trailer for “Godzilla Minus Zero” has arrived, giving fans their latest look at director Takashi Yamazaki’s highly anticipated follow-up to the Oscar-winning “Godzilla Minus One.” The trailer confirms that Godzilla survived the events of the previous film and teases a much darker chapter for the characters who thought the monster was finally gone.
The upcoming movie is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on Nov. 6, 2026, following its Japanese release on Nov. 3.
Godzilla survived — and he’s coming back
The new footage makes one thing clear: the destruction caused by Godzilla in Godzilla Minus One wasn’t the end.
Set in 1949, two years after the events of the previous movie, Godzilla Minus Zero follows Japan as the country attempts to recover from World War II and the devastation caused by the monster.
But just as people begin rebuilding their lives, the threat returns.

Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return

Ryunosuke Kamiki reprises his role as Kôichi Shikishima, while Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Ôishi. Kisuke Iida also returns as Akio Itagaki.
Their return gives Minus Zero a direct connection to the emotional story established in the previous movie rather than functioning as a completely separate Godzilla adventure.
The sequel also expands its cast with several new additions.

The film introduces Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa and Jun Kunimura in new roles.
Tanaka plays biologist Kanji Murakami, while Nagasawa portrays weather forecaster Makoto Aoyama. Kunimura joins the cast as Dr. Ogata.
The combination of returning characters and new figures suggests that the story will explore different perspectives as Japan confronts Godzilla once again.
What is Godzilla Minus Zero about?
While the full plot remains under wraps, the movie takes place in 1949 Japan, continuing the postwar setting established by Godzilla Minus One.

The sequel is also notable from a technical standpoint.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” is the first Japanese production in the franchise to be filmed for IMAX, giving audiences a larger-scale presentation designed specifically for premium-format theaters.
That could make the monster’s return particularly impressive on the big screen, especially given the movie’s destruction-heavy sequences.
The previous film was produced on a relatively modest budget but became a major international success, earning roughly $114 million worldwide and winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
When does Godzilla Minus Zero come out in the U.S.?
For American moviegoers, Godzilla Minus Zero opens in theaters on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.
The Japanese theatrical release is scheduled for Nov. 3, making the U.S. release just a few days later.
The movie will also make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 26, giving some audiences an early opportunity to see Yamazaki’s latest take on the iconic monster.
Is Godzilla Minus Zero the final movie?
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the new trailer is its suggestion that this story could be the end.
The trailer includes a message indicating that there will not be a third installment, strongly suggesting that Yamazaki’s story is being planned as a two-film arc.
That would make Minus Zero more than a conventional sequel. It could serve as the conclusion to the particular story that began with Godzilla Minus One.
