Jake Gyllenhaal Faces a Deadly Romance in ‘Remain’
Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor are drawn into a love story with a dangerous supernatural edge in the first trailer for Remain, the upcoming romantic thriller from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.
The movie brings together two storytellers known for very different kinds of emotional tension. Shyamalan, the director behind The Sixth Sense, Signs and Split, developed the story with Nicholas Sparks, whose novels include The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and The Last Song. Sparks also published his own novel based on their shared concept, while Shyamalan wrote and directed the film version.
Gyllenhaal stars as Tate, a withdrawn architect who travels to a small coastal community for a new project. He is still carrying the weight of a devastating personal loss and appears more comfortable keeping people at a distance.
That begins to change when he meets Wren, played by Dynevor. Their connection develops quickly, giving Tate an unexpected reason to step outside the isolation he has built around himself.
But the trailer makes it clear that Wren is not simply a stranger offering him a fresh start.
As Tate becomes more involved in her life, unsettling questions begin to surface. The peaceful town starts to feel threatening, and what first appears to be a tender romance gradually turns into a mystery involving secrets, resentment and danger. Tate soon finds himself searching for the truth about Wren’s past—and questioning whether the forces surrounding them can be explained at all.
The Cape Cod setting gives the story a quiet, picturesque backdrop, but Shyamalan uses that calm atmosphere to create unease. Scenic coastlines and intimate conversations are interrupted by ominous images, suspicious behavior and warnings that suggest Tate has entered a situation far more dangerous than he realizes.
The premise also places Remain somewhere between a Nicholas Sparks romance and a traditional Shyamalan thriller. The relationship between Tate and Wren appears to be the heart of the film, while the supernatural mystery raises larger questions about grief, mortality and whether love can reach beyond the limits of ordinary life. The official book description similarly frames the story around love, sorrow and the boundary between life and death.

Dynevor, best known for playing Daphne Bridgerton in Netflix’s Bridgerton, brings warmth and mystery to Wren. The trailer presents her as someone capable of drawing Tate back into the world, even as her presence raises doubts about what is real.
Gyllenhaal, meanwhile, plays Tate as a man trying to regain control of his life. His performance in the footage is restrained and wary, fitting a character who wants rational answers but may be facing something that cannot be understood through reason alone.
The supporting cast includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare and Maria Dizzia. Shyamalan also appears in the film as a character named Nash.
The collaboration between Shyamalan and Sparks is one of the film’s biggest points of interest. Their styles may seem far apart, but both regularly tell stories about people confronting loss, faith and life-changing relationships. In Remain, those interests meet inside a story that treats romance as both a source of hope and a doorway to danger.
Warner Bros. Pictures is scheduled to release Remain in U.S. theaters on February 5, 2027, placing the supernatural love story just ahead of Valentine’s Day.
